Professional Mixing & Mastering

Mastering is the art of enhancing a mix, bringing out the elements in balance so that it sounds good everywhere.

For most mastering sessions, we use a combination of:

* Passive EQ (in mid-side configuration)
* Compression (optical, VCA and multi-band)
* Saturation / tape emulation
* Stereo widening
* Limiting (true peak and multi-band)
* Digital clipping (to obtain a louder master if desired)
All masters are run through our ultra smooth SPL PASSEQ mastering equaliser. This is used in conjunction with mastering grade analogue to digital conversion by RME.

Good mastering is about achieving balance between yin & yang. When we boost a frequency, we cut another… so that the end result sounds perfectly balanced and harmonically faithful to your mix.

More about passive EQ

Passive EQ differs from active EQ in that there is no amplification of frequencies involved. This means it can only cut or filter audio signals, and amplification only happens on the output stage to compensate for loss of level.

The circuitry inside them is very simple compared to active EQs, as there are no powered components such as transistors or opamps. As a result, the audio is not harmed as much, this is why they sound so transparent and natural.

We use passive EQ in mid-side configuration, allowing us to process the middle and side channels separately. This is useful for equing elements in the mix such as guitar and cymbals, without affecting vocals bass and drums.

More about our mastering

Mastering sessions are unattended, meaning we transfer files across the internet. We don’t charge for revisions, so you can make as many changes as you like until you’re happy.

We offer two types, standard and stem mastering. Standard is mastering a single file, whereas stem mastering involves up to 6 groups of instruments which allows for more refinement. We can also master for Vinyl.

If you would like to book some mastering online, choose one of the packages above.

We offer a free mp3 sample master for first time customers, request here.

Notes for file submission:

* Please submit mixdowns in WAV or AIFF format, minimum 44.1kHz and 24 bit.
* Allow 3dB of headroom (loudest peak should be -3dB or less)
* No compression or limiting on the mixbus
* Please supply us with reference tracks (similar material in the same genre) if you’re after a particular sound
